The largest pizza company in the U.S. is closing one of its two remaining Ann Arbor-area locations.
The Pizza Hut at 5630 Jackson Road in Scio Township is now closed. Monday was its last day of operation. The franchised location is owned by a Canadian-based restaurant group that operates several other restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.
Signs on the door of the restaurant encouraged customers to visit the closest Pizza Hut, located at 3045 Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti Township. The signs also indicate that the lunch buffet that was offered at the Jackson Road store is being offered at the Carpenter Road store.
A staff member at the Jackson Road store could not comment on the reasons for the closing but did say almost all of the employees will be moving to other Pizza Hut locations in the area once the restaurant closes.
The Carpenter Road location will be the only Pizza Hut operating in the Ann Arbor market even though Pizza Hut is recognized as the largest pizza company in the U.S. With nearly 15,000 locations and sales of $12 billion in 2014, Pizza Hut is larger than Ann Arbor-based Domino’s which has 12,000 stores and had sales of $8 billion in 2014.
Pizza Hut is part of Yum! Brands Inc. that also owns KFC and Taco Bell. Yum! Brands has an approximate value of $33 billion based on stock prices. Yum! Closed Monday with a stock price of $77.19.
